BI and Hadoop

Last week I found some time to stop by at Cloudera where Ralph Kimball was giving a talk on BI and Hadoop.

There was a nice networking part too. In fact, I ran into some old friends of mine from the previous life. It turns out they're still in the BI consulting business. Funny thing is that my boss's boss walked in the middle of it too. What the heck, I thought to myself.

Of course, my expectations were high. Especially, given Cloudera is now a workplace for Doug Cutting. However, the only thing I could remember from his presentation is what the difference between methodologists and terrorists is. Well, you *can* negotiate with terrorists :). When sharing it with a friend of mine, the first thing I was asked was "Do you really want to deal with these hash tables?" I didn't have anything to say -- Kimball didn't get to hash tables.

Now, maybe Kimball should stick to the pure BI, but it was clear to me that it's high time to develop the cloud BI expertise. Especially, when the management encourages you to pick up an O'Reilly Hadoop book at Amazon.
